Abstract

D'ALOISIO, Florencia. Secondary School as Personal Training for Later Life: Dignity, Success, and Citizenship. A Comparative Analysis of Youthful Meanings in Dissimilar Conditions of Life and School. RMIE [online]. 2015, vol.20, n.67, pp.1131-1155. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article addresses, from comparative research in dissimilar living and educational conditions, some meanings that young people in the city of Córdoba, Argentina, construct regarding secondary school. In both young populations, secondary school acquires important meaning in terms of personal training for future life. This meaning, in each case, acquires shades of difference that are closely related to living conditions and schooling. For some young people, from the lower classes, school is a way to be "someone worthwhile" and "less ignorant"; for other students, from upper middle levels, school is the basis for consolidating dignity and personal/professional success, while becoming a participative citizen.

Keywords : secondary education; young people; expectations; socioeconomic factors; Argentina.
