Abstract

LUIS PAULIN, Horacio. "Respect": An Analysis of the Conflicts of Youthful Sociability at Secondary School. RMIE [online]. 2015, vol.20, n.67, pp.1105-1130. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article presents the results of research centered on the reconstruction of young people's perspectives of conflict among secondary school students in social settings. The study was based on qualitative research that included participant observation, interviews, and discussion groups with young people and teachers in two schools in Cordoba, Argentina-schools that serve upper middle class and lower class sectors, respectively. The analysis is centered on physical confrontations ("fights") among students; it shows that such confrontations emerge in situations defined by their participants as profound insults to their identity. As a result, they can be understood as conflicts due to recognition. Lastly, considerations are presented regarding educational interventions that involve deliberating with young people on forms of interaction and the deconstruction of arguments that justify violence.

Keywords : students; socialization; discrimination; violence; school; Argentina.
