Within the framework of the ethnic appropriations of public school in contexts of cultural diversity in Mexico, a high school project was carried out from 1996 to 2003 in the Mixe community of Santa María Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca, to strengthen community identity and the education of future Mixe intermediaries. As a pioneering experience of the time, the high school acquired an ethno-political character made manifest in its school practices and discourses of identity, documented in previous studies as well as in its forms of management. This article reports on the partial results of a recent research project that compiles the school experiences of graduates (professionals and nonprofessionals) fifteen years after their graduation, and explains their appropriations of the identity proposal promoted by the school. Use is made of an ethnographic analysis of the graduates' perspectives, their career paths after graduation, and their occupations between the community and the city.
