ESTRADA RUIZ, Marcos J.. Youthful Affiliation and Institutional Disaffilation: The Complexity of Dropping Out of High School. RMIE [online]. 2014, vol.19, n.61, pp.431-453. ISSN 1405-6666.
This article presents the results of research on dropping out of high school in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. By focusing on dropouts' life stories and interviews with parents and actors in the school community, we conducted joint analysis that shows a structural aspect young people share in the process of dropping out. We emphasize that in spite of the existence of factors in common, such as the apparent triggers of adverse socioeconomic conditions and academic failure, it is institutional disaffiliation that explains most cases of dropping out. Part of this process is youthful affiliation, which has not been consolidated if dropping out occurs during the initial months of school, but which later emerges as a strategy for dealing with the problem.
