Abstract

LOPEZ ZARATE, Romualdo. Perceptions of Academics, Directors, amd Employees on the Legitimacy and Leadership of Reactors at Public Mexican Universities. RMIE [online]. 2013, vol.18, n.58, pp.811-837. ISSN 1405-6666.

The rectors of public universities form part of the structure of institutional authority. Rectors' authorities have various legitimating sources: rational, traditional, and charismatic. One aspect of legitimacy is related to the university community's perception of the rector's performance and leadership. This article studies the perceptions of various sectors of the university community with regard to the rector's performance. A description is given of the perceptions of various university actors (academics, academic directors, and administrative employees) regarding the rector's form of management and conduct in institutional life, based on field studies at twelve public universities in Mexico.

Keywords : leadership; legitimacy; rectors; public universities; Mexico.
