Abstract
LOPEZ ZARATE, Romualdo; GONZALEZ CUEVAS, Óscar Manuel; MENDOZA ROJAS, Javier and PEREZ CASTRO, Judith. The Role of Rectors in the Governance of Mexico's Public Universitie. RMIE [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.51, pp.1021-1054. ISSN 1405-6666.
This article reviews the concept of governance, and its evolution and application for institutions of higher education in Mexico, as well as the role (transcendent or not) that rectors play in guiding their institutions. The text is based on the analysis of interviews conducted with twelve rectors of autonomous public universities in various states. According to these actors' perceptions, four issues influence university governance: the questioning of different groups within the institution that limits or facilitates management, the rectors' reaction to the need to implement public policies designed and applied in the last decade, the impact on their management of having a plan of institutional development, and lastly, the influence of diverse agents outside of the institution.
