Abstract

VEGA, Rodrigo. "Spreading Instruction in a Pleasant Manner": Natural History and Geography in the Women's Magazines of Mexico, 1840-1855. RMIE [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.48, pp.107-129. ISSN 1405-6666.

During the period from 1840 to 1855, publications for women appeared in Mexico. Among other topics, they covered natural history and geography. The magazines were entitled Semanario de las señoritas mejicanas. Educación científica, moral y literaria del bello sexo (1840-1842); Panorama de las señoritas. Periódico pintoresco, científico y literario (1842); El presente amistoso. Dedicado a las señoritas mexicanas por Cumplido (1847); La semana de las señoritas mejicanas (1851); and La camelia. Semanario de literatura, variedades, teatros, modas, etc. Dedicado a las señoritas mejicanas (1853). All of them were used to reinforce the traditional role of Mexican women through scientific instruction for women.
