This research aimed at characterizing and interpreting the social representations that a group of middle-class students in Bogotá attribute to school. Three notions that categorize the young people were established: school as an institution that guarantees obtaining better living conditions; as access to scenarios of greater social recognition; and in last place, as a place for consolidating strong ties of friendship. For purposes of interpretation, use was made of school's place in theories of reproduction and social transformation. The results were compared with those of similar Latin American research studies.
