This article analyzes the possibility of joining two distant perspectives of educational inequality: the so-called "reproduction theories" and the current of school effectiveness. The intent is to contribute elements for a debate on the agenda of the sociology of education in Latin America. Research on school effectiveness shows that in comparison with sociocultural factors, schools have less power to influence educational results; however, schools have a margin of action, as proven by the results of the author's research. Available evidence, while not totally compatible with reproduction theories, also questions the initial optimism of the movement of effective schools. Therefore, we consider it necessary to address educational inequality by using theories of intermediate scope, specifically centered on the processes of schools as organizations.
