Abstract

This article addresses discussions regarding the normative and pedagogical aspects of Castilian Grammar Intended for the Use by Americans. A brief analysis is made of the book’s general characteristics and the political context of its publishing. A study is made of the conceptions of norm and variety present in the book, and special emphasis is placed on matters related to the concept of linguistic correction. The article also studies the notion of norms in relation to language as a potential unifying factor in Latin America. In conclusion, the book’s pedagogical intent is analyzed, along with the political reasons that motivated Bello to write a work of such scope.
