This article reveals the challenges, contradictions and problems encountered by teachers at normal schools during advising and tutoring processes. Such processes are carried out during the 7th and 8th semesters of students working towards an undergraduate degree in preschool and elementary education. The article also explains the way these aspects affect notions like training, practice, theory and knowledge. Based on a qualitative study, we emphasize that the training of “new” teachers required by the reforms to normal education has caused professors at normal schools to face their academic limitations and question their own experience.
