Abstract

HERNANDEZ GONZALEZ, Joaquín. Construir una identidad. Vida juvenil y estudio en el CCH Sur. RMIE [online]. 2006, vol.11, n.29, pp.459-481. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article studies identity as a sociocultural process that links the individual, the society, and the way individuals use symbolic resources from the cultural context (Holland et al., 1998; Taylor 1996). The study's methodology was of the interpretative qualitative type, with nonparticipating observations and interviews. Students construct their identity by accommodating their young lifestyles to their studies. At school, "gratifying" youthful activities adjust to the demands of maintaining continuity in "school work". The construction of identity articulates a moral discourse involving freedom and responsibility, as well as personal maturation. The students show reflectiveness by expressing their thoughts and affirming their own voice.

Keywords : young people; students; high school education; identity; morality; Mexico.
