Resumen

GUERRA RAMIREZ, María Irene. Los jóvenes del siglo XXI, ¿para qué trabajan? Los sentidos del trabajo en la vida de jóvenes de sectores urbano-populares de la Ciudad de México. RMIE [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.25, pp.419-449. ISSN 1405-6666.

An analysis is presented of the meanings young people attach to their participation in the labor market at the entry level, and within the broader framework of their life project. The methodology is based on a qualitative and biographical focus that collects, through autobiographical narratives, the life stories of young people that revolve around their experiences in various fields of action. These young people live in low-class urban sectors of Mexico City, and have completed the minimum level of basic secondary education. Four major dimensions of the meaning of work are distinguished, each with particular characteristics: work as a means to an end, work as a norm or tradition, work as a value in itself, and work in terms of emotional links.

Palabras llave : young people; employment; scholastic and labor trajectory; professional education; meaning of work; Mexico.
