Abstract

POMPA GARCIA, Marín; CORRAL RIVAS, José Javier; DIAZ VASQUEZ, Manuel Antonio  and  MARTINEZ SALVADOR, Martín. Función de ahusamiento y volumen compatible para Pinus arizonica Engelm. En el Suroeste de Chihuahua. Rev. Cien. For. Mex [online]. 2009, vol.34, n.105, pp.117-134. ISSN 1405-3586.

Pinus arizonica. is one of the most abundant and regularly used species that grows at the southeastern part of Chihuahua state, and covers 80 per cent of the forest territory, with an annual wood production near 160,000 m2; however, knowledge about the estimation of its commercial volume is limited. Thus, the aim of this study was to know its taper and to formulate a compatible equation that guarantees their operation application. Six models including linear and non-linear equations were tested and fitted to 2,230 data pairs from 319 felled trees from harvesting operations. Fitting goodness was examined through the comparison of the adjusted coefficient of determination, root mean square error and a precision index. Statistical techniques to verify and correct problems of collinearity, autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity were included. Biging model had the best prediction ability; its mathematical integration makes it possible to get a taper expression compatible to total and commercial volumes for trees. This equation is recommended to assess diameter and height of the stem and total and commercial volume for the species that was analyzed.

Keywords : Taper; volumetric estimations; Biging model; Pinus arizonica Engelm; commercial volume; compatible volume.
