Abstract
ROCHIN-BANAGA, Heriberto; SCHWENNICKE, Tobias and HERRERA-GIL, Luis Alberto. Record of Mammuthus columbi in the El Carrizal area, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Bol. Soc. Geol. Mex [online]. 2017, vol.69, n.2, pp.495-503. ISSN 1405-3322. https://doi.org/10.18268/bsgm2017v69n2a12.
We report and describe the skeletal remains of Mammuthus columbi from El Carrizal, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The presence of M. columbi along with the lithological features described in the study area, suggest a Late Pleistocene savanna environment with a higher humidity condition than in the present. Additionally, it is also the first record of Proboscidea in the area with a detailed stratigraphic location. The data collected in this study provide clues for future studies on the distribution of Pleistocene megafauna in North America, especially the Proboscidea.
