Abstract

FERREIRA CLARINDO, M.; STANISKI, A.  and  STRACHULSKI, J.. Traditional botanical knowledge of mateiros in rural communities in the Serra das Almas Region, Paraná - Br. Polibotánica [online]. 2022, n.53, pp.219-238.  Epub Apr 04, 2022. ISSN 1405-2768.  https://doi.org/10.18387/polibotanica.53.15.

This article analyzes the traditional botanical knowledge of foresters in three rural communities located in a region socially identified as Serra das Almas, Paraná State - Brazil. The studied region is located within the Atlantic Forest Biome, in a place of occurrence of the Montana Mixed Ombrophilous Forest to Araucaria Forest. In it, there are faxinalense communities, quilombola remnants and small farmers vying for space amid the advance of agribusiness in the region. Using the snowball technique, semi-structured interviews were carried out with a total of five people from three communities in the region. After the interviews, botanical material was collected through a guided tour through the various stages of the forest 103 species were collected, which were identified at the herbarium of the State University of Ponta Grossa. The data reveal that the communities in question have their ways of life inseparable from nature. It was detected that, in addition to material appropriation, there is also a symbolic one, given the multiple validity given to plant species in the region: food, religious, healing, for the construction of artifacts, among others. There are other cognitions perpetuating them and that can contribute to overcoming the crisis of the civilization model in the context of multiple modernities and to reflecting on the devastation of nature, if their meanings are expanded.
