CAMPOS-CUELLAR, R. y APONTE, H.. Growth of Limnobium laevigatum (Hydrocharitaceae) under four different NO 3 -: NH 4 + proportions under laboratory conditions. Polibotánica [online]. 2020, n.50, pp.97-107. Epub 25-Nov-2020. ISSN 1405-2768. https://doi.org/10.18387/polibotanica.50.7.
Limnobium laevigatum is a floating aquatic plant with great potential for use as forage and as a carbon capture plant. In order to optimize its growth, it is essential to know the optimal culture conditions for its propagation, being one of these parameters the proportion of NO3 -:NH4 +. The aim of this article was to evaluate the growth of Limnobium laevigatum by testing four different NO3 -:NH4 + proportions under laboratory conditions. The experiment lasted 28 days in which the plants were subjected to four treatments with different NO3 -:NH4 + proportions (6:1, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3). Growth parameters were analyzed, such as root length, number of leaves, number of ramets, leaf area, wet weight, dry weight, relative growth rate (TCR), percentage of chlorosis and percentage of dead leaves. The results indicate that the treatment with the highest amount of nitrates (6:1) was the one with the greatest length of root, number of leaves, ramets, foliar area, wet weight, dry weight and TCR. The treatment with the highest amount of ammonium (1:3) had a higher percentage of chlorosis and dead leaves. The reasons why the treatments with more ammonium had lower performance are discussed, among which the negative changes in the enzymatic functioning are caused by this molecule.
