QUIROZ-FLORES, A. de J.; MIRANDA-ARCE, M.G.; RAMIREZ-GARCIA ARMORA, P. y LOT-HELGUERAS, A.. Phosphorus accumulation within the sediments of hydrophytes communities in the Tochac lake, Hidalgo, Mexico. Polibotánica [online]. 2018, n.46, pp.233-240. ISSN 1405-2768. https://doi.org/10.18387/polibotanica.46.15.
Located in the state of Hidalgo, the Tochac Lake is a body of water, which, due to its extension and aquatic flora, is considered an important relic of the great lake system that existed in the great basin of the central plateau of Mexico since ancient times. However, during the last decades several factors, anthropogenic activities standing out among them, have caused significant changes in the lake’s morphology, depth, water quality, nutrient quality of the sediments and the distribution of hydrophytes. The aim of this work is to evaluate the accumulation of total phosphorus and extractable phosphorus found in the sediments with absence and presence of hydrophytes of the littoral zone during the dry season. The obtained results show that the phosphorus contents with presence of hydrophytes in the sediments display significant differences compared to those sediments in which the aquatic vegetation is absent, which in turn, allows to suppose that the presence of hydrophytes, which provide easily biodegradable organic matter, contributes to the accumulation of phosphorus within the sediments.
