Abstract

ZAMORA-CRESCENCIO, P. et al. Composition and structure of secondary vegetation in Bethania, Campeche, Mexico. Polibotánica [online]. 2018, n.45, pp.57-74. ISSN 1405-2768.  https://doi.org/10.18387/polibotanica.45.5.

We characterized the floristic composition, structure and diversity of woody species (trees and shrubs) of secondary vegetation in Bethania, Campeche. With such purpose, we selected two sites of secondary vegetation: a six-year- old site (site 1) and a ten-year-old (site2), and we established 10 plots of 10 x 10 m (1 000 m2) in each site. We identified and measured all individuals ≥ 1 cm of DAP, within the plots. The analysis of the vegetation structure in each site was based on the species importance values. We estimated species diversity using the Shannon-Wiener index (H). At both sites, we found 2,367 woody individuals of 80 species, distributed in 65 genera and 29 families. The family with the highest number of species was Fabaceae (16 species). The species that showed the highest importance value index were Piscidia piscipula, Croton arboreus, Coccoloba cozumelensis, Lysiloma latisiliquum and Vitex gaumeri. The diversity values were higher in the site 2 (the ten-year-old) with 3.1, than in the site 1 (the six-year-old) with 2.9. The basal area of site 1 was 25.57 m2 / ha and for the site 2 it was 44.90 m2 / ha. Finally, we agree that these species scarcity or abundance is related to the human activity which affects the structure and floristic composition in the studied sites.
