ANAYA, Luis. Calles, founder of banking institutions: The Mercantile and Agricultural Bank of Sonora, 1917-1935. Am. Lat. Hist. Econ [online]. 2020, vol.27, n.3, e1083.  Epub 22-Dic-2020. ISSN 2007-3496.  https://doi.org/10.18232/alhe.1083.

Plutarco Elías Calles is recognized as the creator of the central bank, forerunner of development bank and an important promoter of Mexican banking reorganization. However, his activity as a private banker is unknown. This investigation carries out a meticulous examination of original sources to determine the circumstances surrounding the founding of Banco Mercantil y Agrícola de Sonora, the fate of its main businesses and the resources it used to survive almost two decades. Of course, Calles was its main driver and shareholder. Among other lines analyzed are their business training, the performance of managers and the influence of regional economic activity on the Bank, as well as the business political networks that encouraged and incubated.
