This article analyzes the role the doctors played in the discussion on the economic dimension of food, that is the recognition of the relationship between low wages and the difficulties that families have for acquiring a healthy diet and according to the productive requirements. In addition to acknowledging the discussion during the 1930s and 1940s about the effects of the Great Depression on the nutritional status of the workers, we seek to recognize the participation of doctors in diverse instances that aimed to discuss and apply a minimum and a family wage, as a way to respond to the loss of workers’ purchasing capacity.
