The objectives of the article are to explain the economic crisis in Zulia state in the context of the First World War and the Great Depression and to analyze the relationship between the state and the private sector during those crises. To carry out this research, the historical method was used with the analysis of documentary sources located in local and national archives. It is concluded that the crisis of international capitalism obstructed the prosperity of Zulia state, despite that its impact was mitigated due to an economy that was beginning to expand due to oil exploitation.
