This article argues the economic formation of Santa Catarina, 1880 1945, the ways of transports and the way of communication. The standard of growth of the catarinense economy in this period was slow and based in the small mercantile production where each region was specialized in an economic activity. The combination of these two elements was unfolded in a system of disintegrated transport. Besides the introduction and a brief historiography review, the article is divided in four topics. Initially we will argue the economic formation of Santa Catarina, detaching the standard of growth, the main economic activities and the regional formations. After that, a general panorama of the broken up system of transport in Santa Catarina will be made: railroads and fluvial navigation. In third place, the text presents a brief sketch on the project of the Rede Catarinense de Viação Férrea. And finally, it will be argued the relation between the standard of growth and the transports in a specialized and broken up economy.
