SANTOS, Fábio Alexandre dos. Rio Claro e a greve dos trabalhadores da Cia: Paulista de Estradas de Ferro em 1906. Am. Lat. Hist. Econ [online]. 2006, n.25, pp.95-117. ISSN 2007-3496.
Rehearsal today. This was the message written in code sent through telegraph to 119 train stations calling all workers of the Companhia Paulista de Estrada de Ferro to the 1906 strike. Among several others, Rio Claro was one of the cities where the coded message was sent. It was the seat of important railroad services, such as warehouses, offices, garages and repair shops; this meant that the strike movement altered the social, cultural and economic daily life of its inhabitants. This article shows how a modern activity (the railroad) and its strike movement altered the life of Rio Claro. It also shows how the acts of the Companhia Paulista's managers to solve the strike were anything but modern, in view of their use of the State's forces.
