Abstract

RUBIO-HERRERA, Amada  and  CASTILLO-BURGUETE, María Teresa. Maya women in Yucatan: participative experience in a productive organization. Convergencia [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.64, pp.39-63. ISSN 2448-5799.

We present the results of a research related to the participative experience of a group of Maya women named: Múuch Meyaj Ko'olelo'ob (MMK), informing about the impact and changes caused in the women's life through a university-run program. We apply a qualitative methodology. The group was formed by the National System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) in 1997, and since its beginnings, the members have joined to produce and commercialize "horchata" (rice drink). The members of the group interacted with external agents, in particular with the Academic Program for Sustainable Development in Southern Yucatan (PADSUR) of the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY). Through the analysis, we demonstrate how this participative process is reflected in transformations identified at personal levels by the women; they value the experience of working in the group, because it has allowed them changes in their gender relationships, even though participation has increased their workload.

Keywords : rural women; productive organization; external agents; training; transformations.
