Abstract

ROVIRA-SANCHO, Guiomar. Media activism and the criminalization of protest: media and social movements in Mexico. Convergencia [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.61, pp.35-60. ISSN 2448-5799.

The performativity of social protest renders it vulnerable to omissions or distortions in the media. Violence invariably seduces television and leads to criminalization and repression. This paper will examine the actions of Mexican social movements when faced with media omission. To this end, it will go over specific examples that reveal how major media groups criminalize or distort protests. Similarly, it will analyze alternative communication experiences by interviewing those that actively participate in said processes.

Keywords : social movements; media; alternative communications; violence; criminalization.
