In this article, Bernardo Kliksberg describes the fundamental role of families in society and in the development of Latin America. For this purpose he reviews current studies that demonstrate a strong positive correlation between the family, violence, education, and health. In the second part of this article, he examines some of the social problems faced by the region and takes a looks at how this affects the family.
