Prohibitions can have shifting meanings according to the historical contexts. The global policy of drug prohibition has brought negative consequences in terms of violence, loss of life and resources, and the weakening of institutions. This article will analyse from a transnational perspective the historical origins of alcohol and drug prohibition in Mexico. In the first quarter of the twentieth century, American Protestant groups inspired in the Social Gospel movement, attempted to export their moral crusade for alcohol prohibition from within the United States to Mexico. Missionaries, Protestant churches, and civil society groups, promoted their temperance work in Mexico, aligned with the Constitutional revolutionaries, American Protestants influenced the culture of alcohol and drugs in Mexico.
