Resumen

RODRIGUEZ PARDO, José Manuel. The Academic Dispute between Oratorians and Jesuits in the Portugal of the 18th Century. Their Relationship with the Illustrated Despotism of the Marquis of Pombal. Hist. graf [online]. 2018, n.51, pp.241-263. ISSN 1405-0927.

The Society of Jesus, which excelled since its founding in 1540 in Portugal, and the Congregation of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri, focused on the study and dissemination of the so-called “Modern Philosophy”, collided to obtain the primacy in teaching and scientific activity in the Iberian kingdom during the eighteenth century. The expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759, together with the persecution that some figures of the “neris” suffered in this context from the enlightened despot known as Marquis of Pombal, led to an unsuspected outcome in this dispute.

Palabras llave : Saint Philip Neri; Jesuits; 18th Century; Society of Jesus.
