PERRONE, Nicolás Hernán. The Re-appropriation of the Classical Antiquity in the Educational Reformist Project of Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro S. J. (1735-1809). Hist. graf [online]. 2017, n.49, pp.177-210. ISSN 1405-0927.
Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro was one of the most relevant members of the Iberoamerican community of exiled Jesuits in Italy in the late XVIII Century. To specialized historiography he is mostly known for two of this works: Catalogo de las lenguas, a treaty of comparative linguistics, and Causas de la Revolución de Francia, a political-theological study of the French Revolution written in a conspirative key. However, due to his encyclopedic production, much of his works and his political and theological ideas have not been studied in depth. In this paper we will analyze the ideas of Hervás y Panduro about the Greco-roman antiquity and the ways in which he reappropriated some of its most important cultural expressions for his educational and reformist projects. We will particularly focus our attention on Hervás’ ideas about the ways and the purpose of teaching Latin, Rethoric, and Roman Law.
