Abstract

TORRES ROJO, Luis Arturo  and  RIVAS HERNANDEZ, José Ignacio. Evil's historic and rhetoric: the missional path in Jacob Baegert's Noticias of the Ancient California. Hist. graf [online]. 2014, n.42, pp.129-157. ISSN 1405-0927.

This text, "Evil's historic and rhetoric: the missional path in Jacob Baegert's Noticias of the Ancient California", essays a reading of the Jesuit's work through the metaphoric and conceptual keys constructed by Blumenberg, Koselleck and De Certeau. The main idea subscribes that Baegert's discourse, sustained by the biblical metaphoric of the walker and the concept of sane curiosity, has moved from the understanding of the world through its representation as a sacred book and nature's book, to a view rooted in the book of history and the moral, which leads to the configuration of a binding transcendental truth between the gospel and missionary experience. It is highlighted that it is Baegert's observation of the Californian moral world which detonates the recognition of the new instances of the presence of evil, towards which he leads his critique: Lutheranism and modernity.

Keywords : Curiosity; metaphoric; book of world; California; path.
