Abstract

RESINA, Joan Ramon. The Legacy of the Barbarians: The Decay of Memory and Tragic Brilliance in Amic-Amat and Forasters by Ventura Pons. Hist. graf [online]. 2012, n.39, pp.67-85. ISSN 1405-0927.

This essay analyzes two films by Catalan director Ventura Pons, to explore the problem of decadence and cultural restoration. Both films address the challenge of transmitting cultural values within a society in crisis or decline. The lack of natural conditions for social regeneration or reproduction leads to a search for a young "barbarian" (savior) capable of restoring the vitality of a dying culture. In Forasters and Amic-Amat, history is transformed from a linear struggle toward liberation into a circular system that allows identity to emerge from the repetition of particular destinies.

Keywords : heritage; memory; tradition; history; ricorso.
