Abstract

DRUKER, Raquel. School and Identity. Hist. graf [online]. 2010, n.35, pp.17-47. ISSN 1405-0927.

The article tries to explain how groups constructs their identity. In this case, the Jews of Mexico are seen through the optic of a school. School is here understood as a social space built by the group in order to reproduce and continue it's identity. The observation of the school is done from the starting point of the elements known by the group, which are recognized by the group and are called "common places", and of how when such common places cease to be shared, the school sufers a break. Out of this break, a new group emerges, and this new group shares new common places, which are relevant to a society going through a process of modernization.

Keywords : culture; common places; traditional society; modernity; change.
