GUZMAN MEJIA, José Ignacio. Ethical or civic education to the surgeon?. Cir. gen [online]. 2017, vol.39, n.3, pp.183-190. ISSN 1405-0099.
Given the great technological advance, the easy access to information, the new educational models, the physician and especially the general surgeon, focus their attention on developing skills and competencies to master, putting their interest in these new areas of knowledge (endoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, cellular engineering, etc.) neglecting humanistic and social areas, the interest in ethical, deontological, civic, enforceable health regulations and general culture aspects (literature, painting, music, architecture, history, etc.) has declined significantly in recent decades, despite being part of the university curriculum, these areas of human knowledge are increasingly limited in the surgeon in training, therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the need to reinforce the interest in these areas for the integral formation of the surgeon and his constant and permanent training. It should be noted that despite the title of this paper, “Ethical or Civic Education to the Surgeon”, it is essential that both civic and ethical aspects be included in the comprehensive educational process of the general surgeon.
