The radical species derived from the N-ω-haloalkylpyridones 4b, 6c and the xanthates 7a, 7b undergo oxidative cyclization to the bicyclic 2-pyridone derivatives 8a-c irrespective of whether they are generated under reductive (Bu₃SnH/AIBN) or oxidative [Fe(II)/H₂O₂/DMSO or DLP] conditions.
