Rev. Soc. Quím. Méx [online]. 2002, vol.46, n.4, pp.335-340. ISSN 0583-7693.

The influence of seven compounds of the type 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-alkyl-imidazolines (1a-7a) and their corresponding amidic precursors (1b-7b) on the corrosion rate of mild steel in characteristic hydrogen sulfide environments of the petroleum industry was studied using weight loss measurements. The results show that 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-alkyl-imidazolines are better corrosion inhibitors than their corresponding amidic precursors and that the efficiency of corrosion inhibition in both families depends on chain length of alkyl group and the concentration of inhibitor. Semiempirical calculations (PM3) involving the interaction of compounds 1a and 1b with the coordination compound Fe(SH)3(H2S)3 were obtained with the objective of giving a possible explanation to the experimental results.

Palavras-chave : Corrosion inhibitor; 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-alkyl-imidazoline; amidic precursor; hydrogen sulfide; mild steel; semiempirical calculations.
