Abstract

AGUILAR-MARTINEZ, Martha; MACIAS-RUVALCABA, Norma  and  GONZALEZ, Ignacio. Traveling Through the Square Mechanism of the Quinone Reduction Pathways: Influence of the Proton Donor Addition on the Reaction Intermediaries in a Non-Aqueous Solvent. Rev. Soc. Quím. Méx [online]. 2000, vol.44, n.1, pp.74-81. ISSN 0583-7693.

In this work cyclic voltammetry was applied to describe mechanistic changes in the reduction of the electromechanical system consisting of a quinone, the 2-phenylamine-1,4-naphtalenedione (PAN), and increasing quantities of phenol, a weakacid reagent. The quinone system was allowed to proceed deliberately along the different characteristic reduction pathways. It was observed step by step the merging of the two waves, corresponding to one-electron charge transfer observed in aprotic media, into a single, two-electron charge transfer wave in the presence of phenol. Applying the Nernst equation for the different redox pairs involved, it was provided a semiquantitative explanation of the potential dependence on the phenolic additive concentration along with the basic properties of the intermediaries Q2−/QH and Q·−/QH·.

Keywords : Organic electrochemistry; quinone reduction mechanisms; reactive intermediates; redox reactions.
