Abstract

In the state of Yucatan more than 150 thousand hectares are planted with maize and the average yield is 0.836 t ha-1. Most of the planted area is under rainfall conditions; therefore maize production and its sustainability depend solely on precipitation. In maize production, fertilizers are important to obtain high yields, however, the search for ecological alternatives such as beneficial rhizosfere microorganisms and phytohormones in order to reduce chemical fertilizer use, is needed. The aim of this study was to compare the use of mycorrhiza (VAM) (Glomus intraradices), Azospirillum brasilense and a Bassinosesteroidal phytormone with chemical fertilizer. The study was conducted in a Luvisol soil during four years (2000 to 2002 and 2004) at Uxmal Experimental Station, Yucatan, Mexico. Eight treatments were evaluated including a negative check without fertilizer; the experimental design was a randomized complete-block with four replications and data analysis were done as a factorial design including years and treatments. Significant differences (p<0.05) were detected for plant height, days to anthesis and grain yield among the years of evaluation. Days to male flowering was the only trait displaying significant differences (p<0.05) among treatments. Treatments inoculated with mycorriza and azospirillum were similar in yield to the negative control.
