Latin America was a laboratory for debate and action driven by various currents of development thinking which protected the wishes of the national bourgeoisies who dreamed euphorically of their European peers. This work investigates the dawning of the term "development" and discusses the most relevant approaches. It rescues the critiques that were established as alternatives to bourgeois thinking and which expressed more inclusive alliances intended as the background for a rupture with capitalism. Meanwhile, the failure of both projects represented the culture medium for neoconservative thinking and for the capitalist restructuring of recent years. The synthesis of the present debate on alternatives leads to reflections on an alternative route using a redefinition of the imagined classic development.
