This study analyzes the possibilities of food exporting countries in Latin America avoiding external restrictions and growing in a sustained way with the new trends in world prices for farm commodities. In this new scenario, the article emphasizes the importance of the income elasticity of domestic demand for food as a brake on the prime-need goods exports driven growth model. All of this is in a context in which the structural heterogeneity of the Latin American economies themselves are registering a fall in the effectiveness of changes in relative prices as an instrument for resolving external restriction in the long term.
