Abstract

CORRALES C., Salvador. Impactos regionales de la modernización en Altos Hornos de México, S.A., 1982-2002. Prob. Des [online]. 2006, vol.37, n.145, pp.105-134. ISSN 0301-7036.

This paper analyzes the changes carried out by AHMSA between 1982-2002 to keep itself in the market when the borders were opened for imports due to Mexico's entry into the WTO and NAFTA. This stage is identified with a growing globalization of the economies and competition for world markets. Modernization represented a high financial cost, leading the company to declare itself in suspension ofpayments in May, 1999. The causes of this financial insolvency were the oversupply of steel in the world and the contraction of domestic consumption, which dissipated the company's competitive strengths and led to a deterioration of regional development in Monclova, in the state of Coahuila.

Keywords : restructuring; modernization; production chain; competitiveness and regional development.
