This essay aims to give a brief account of economic conceptions of money. The first section, money as a means of exchange and accumulation, aims at making a sketch from Adam Smith and Marx to the pillars of quantitative theory. The second, the cartelist approach, briefly analyzes money as a creation of the State. The third gives the appreciations of the post-Keynesians. Finally, a review is made of the major exponents with respect to their appreciation of money as a medium of exchange and unit of account. These points have been offundamental importance in the type of policies applied during the past century of the economy at an international level. Money is an exercise of power in society.
