SANCHEZ-MERCADER, Andrés; CAMARA-SALAZAR, Andrea; TRACONIS-DIAZ, Valeria  e  SANCHEZ-BUENFIL, Gabriel. Analysis of cervical cancer mortality in Mexico and the State of Yucatan. Ginecol. obstet. Méx. [online]. 2021, vol.89, n.9, pp.671-677.  Epub 04-Abr-2022. ISSN 0300-9041.  https://doi.org/10.24245/gom.v89i9.4313.

OBJECTIVE:

To analyze the mortality rate due to cervical cancer in the Mexican Republic and in the state of Yucatan.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Epidemiological, observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study that included all cervical cancer mortality records in the Ministry of Health database for the period 2013-2017. All mortality records in which the basic cause of death was cervical cancer identified according to the ICD-10: C53 were included. The number of deaths from cervical cancer, the different states, age and year of occurrence were taken as variables. Mortality by state was analyzed, and statistical testing was done using the Stata 14 program.

RESULTS:

A total of 19,818 cases of deaths due to cervical cancer were recorded in the period from 2013 to 2017, of which 425 cases belong to the state of Yucatan. Of these, the age group with the highest rate was women over 70 years of age; when comparing the mortality rates per year at the national level with those of the state of Yucatan, it was observed that in this entity mortality is higher with a statistically significant result (p = 0.0067).

CONCLUSIONS:

During the period studied, the mortality rate in the state of Yucatan remained above the national rate, believed to be due to the lack of information about prevention methods, mainly in marginalized areas, which shows the importance of strengthening the knowledge of cervical cancer prevention and screening in the state.
