BACKGROUND:

Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a rare disease characterized by mucinous ascites accompanied by peritoneal and omentum tumor implants. It is usually associated with an appendicular neoplasm, almost always of low histologic grade, the ovary being the most frequently affected site due to metastasis to the reproductive tract. Its diagnosis is extremely complex and treatment options are controversial.

OBJECTIVE:

To report a clinical case and review the literature concerning pseudomyxoma peritonei and its relationship with appendicular tumors.

CLINICAL CASE:

83-year-old patient, with abdominal distension and weight loss in the last three months, with elevation of tumor markers and a multicystic mass and free fluid in the abdomen. It was decided to operate due to suspicion of ovarian cancer. The anatomopathological diagnosis reported low-grade mucinous adenocarcinoma in the appendix and bilateral metastasis in both appendages in the context of peritoneal pseudomyxoma. Nine months after surgery the patient was still being followed up.

CONCLUSIONS:

When faced with the diagnosis of pseudomyxoma peritonei it is decisive to establish a single valid classification that contributes to the dissemination of knowledge and the creation of diagnostic and therapeutic protocols that allow prompt and effective patient care.
