Abstract

VERGARA TENORIO, Ma. del Carmen et al. La conceptualización de las inundaciones y la percepción del riesgo ambiental. Polít. cult. [online]. 2011, n.36, pp.45-69. ISSN 0188-7742.

This study considers the vulnerability of populations as a consequence of flooding, in the watersheds of the Coatzacoalcos and Tuxpan rivers in Veracruz, Mexico. We carried out a geographical analysis of flood risk areas and a survey (n=615) of populations in these areas. In Coatzacoalcos, populations with a higher risk of flooding are lacking services and infrastructure. In Tuxpan, urban infrastructure has a higher risk of flooding; however populations have better socioeconomic conditions. It is necessary to improve the quality of information that the public receives and the participation of the civic society and governmental institutions to diminish the socioeconomic impacts of flooding.

Keywords : vulnerability; risk; flooding; Coatzacoalcos; Tuxpan.
