Once the Brazilian National State was founded, it was necessary to ensure the unity and define the appearance of this new nation. In search of historic testimonies for the construction of its memory, it was founded, in 1838, the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro (Historical and Geographic Brazilian Institute). I intend to demonstrate, by analyzing texts that were published in the review of this institution between 1839 and 1889, how the members of the Institute interpreted in the different ways the contribution of the Society of Jesus in the construction of brazilian's nation and national unity.
