Abstract

WALDMAN MITNICK, Gilda. Chile: indígenas y mestizos negados. Polít. cult. [online]. 2004, n.21, pp.97-110. ISSN 0188-7742.

Starting with the symbol of the iceberg sent by Chile to the 1992 World Exposition in Seville, this article analyzes how and why indigenous and mestizo identities have been denied in that country since the onset of the colonial era, with preference given to “whiteness” as the guiding principle of national identity. It also studies some of the ways in which those denied identities have reemerged on the public stage, both when national identity is questioned and when the rewriting of history offers another reading of the country.

Keywords : iceberg; indigenous; mestizo; whiteness; national identity.
