Abstract

TEJEDA GONZALEZ, José Luis. La política de la tolerancia. Polít. cult. [online]. 2004, n.21, pp.21-35. ISSN 0188-7742.

This article offers an overview of how the concept of tolerance has evolved and developed in step with historical processes. It discusses why it is an issue of current concern in light of the debate on democracy and multiculturalism. The politics of tolerance offers an alternative to societies that are polarized, confrontational, and characterized by antagonisms that could degenerate into violence of any kind. If intolerance seems to impose itself as the power of coercion gains the upper hand, tolerance offers us a prospect wherein civilized reason predominates.

Keywords : tolerance; intolerance; democracy; identity; multiculturalism.
