This essay is based on the concept of tolerance, which it differentiates from the true recognition of the Other. It then analyzes the bases of cultural intransigence  and fundamentalisms and, in particular, the devastation they cause in the contemporary world in the form of racism and totalitarian nationalism. It also attempts to suggest some groundwork for democracy in our time and to reduce the political and racial hatred that have taken root over the past 50 years.
