This paper discusses the role of national and international labor standards and refers to the need to curb the deterioration of employment quality and to promote decent work in the context of strong competitive pressures, network companies and productive chains spread throughout the world, from a Latin American perspective. It reviews the number of ratifications of fundamental international agreements' and the problems involved in their implementation; the relation between these shortcomings and the quality of jobs, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of different alternatives aimed at halting job deterioration. It concludes by pointing out the importance of national legislation and public tools aimed at improved enforcement, in the absence of global and international coercive mechanisms.
